TRAVEL: 2008 Jan-Jun [28
Feb]
Outside.
Trapped in the star-night, a partial lunar eclipse. Viewing time is from 8.30. We stand in the
darkened garden, gazing heavenwards, as the Earth’s shadow
slides slowly across from the right side of the moon. Moments later we are
drawn into the depths of space, as far away as Pluto and beyond, as a
TV program screens on planets. Outer space - first we must conquer the
inner being. Ours is but an artificial world; we are locked within its
mental confines. To understand the stars we cannot
be… Later, we return to the night and watch the
veil of darkness being slowly withdrawn from the face of the moon.
Soon there is only a smidgeon left. The show is over by 10.45. At its
height, at 9.34 pm, 40 percent of the moon is hidden by the
Earth’s shadow. We
stand in the crisp night air. Our conversation turns inevitably to the
unattainable, and the impossibility of attaining broadened knowledge
while shackled to our diminishing horizon. Does light bend? Yes. Can
time curve? Yes. Ask this of most people who, failing to
understand, will regard the questioner as a fool at best.
Scattered thoughts: All matter. Anti-matter. Everything is governed by
its being. We are in a constant state of siege and flux - like the
universe. We match our horizons to mirror those on Earth. Nevertheless,
we cannot export them - to do so would be foolhardy when contemplating
the so-called outer reaches of the Universe. It is there where
anti-matter reigns and from whence sprung life’s source.
